Pushing the Right Buttons

Success in anything comes from knowing which buttons to push and then pushing the right buttons repeatedly.

Let's speak specifically about the buttons that you must push in order to be a successful athlete.

It's easy to watch and marvel at the physical skills that a gifted athlete displays. Even though it is fun to watch and even to desire to be as gifted, many times people forget what has gone into getting to that certain level of excellence.

A map is a necessity. If you were to be taking a trip to the west coast you would undoubtedly make it a point to purchase a map or map quest your journey. Your goal of reaching the west coast, specifically your desired destination, would be next to impossible without employing the proper tools.

Getting back to the elite athlete. The goal is to become as proficient as possible in one's chosen sport. What elements are necessary to achieve this goal. First and foremost is an understanding with oneself about whether or not this is a goal that moves you, a core value, something that you absolutely must have and are willing to do whatever necessary to make it become a reality. After you have made this decision then you can decide on the path.

I would suggest that the path must consist of 6 things in particular.

  • Desire and commitment to the goal
  • A physical work-out plan that allows you to develop the skills and the conditioning necessary to achieve the goal
  • A strong mental attitude and belief in oneself that is developed through commitment to the first two objectives
  • An ability to visualize past successes and feelings
  • Having fun and enjoying the process
  • Finding a coach or mentor who can help you reach your goals
Let's be clear. Nothing worthwhile happens without a plan and a burning desire to achieve the plan. Too often times people make a commitment to something but it is a half hearted commitment. A half hearted commitment is not that much better than no commitment at all. Do it right if you plan to do it at all.

Back to the buttons to push. These buttons to push are actually the skills necessary to achieve success in any endeavor. The athlete who has trained consistently and many times to exhaustion is able to call upon a physical reserve and a muscle memory that others can not because of their only partial commitment to the goal. The athlete who has trained properly will also develop a mind set and an unwillingness to give up when pushed to the wall. Physical training, done properly, leads to supreme mental toughness, utilizes creative imagination, and develops iron will. The secret is to do the work and get the job done. It's the only way to experience the true joy of victory.

Make the plan, work the plan,
